Meet The Doctors

Dr_Craig_J_Helm_MDDr. Craig J. Helm, M.D.

Dr. Craig J. Helm obtained his bachelor of science degree in biochemistry from UCLA, where he was also a varsity gymnast. Dr. Helm went on to pursue his medical education at the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Lousiana, where, based on academic achievement, he was selected into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. Afterwards, Dr. Helm completed residency training in ophthalmology at the prestigious UCLA/Jules Stein Eye Institute. He continued fellowship training at UCLA in cornea and refractive surgery and uveitis.

During his fellowship he was honored to be selected as a Heed Fellow. After completing fellowship training, Dr. Helm served in the United States Air Force at the Portsmouth Naval Medical Center for three years. Dr. Helm has coauthored numerous scientific papers and book chapters. While in Virginia, Dr. Helm was an active faculty member at the Eastern Virginia Medical School Department of Ophthalmology. After leaving the Air Force in 1996, he established a successful private practice in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, where he specialized in cataract surgery, corneal transplantation and laser vision correction.

In 2001, Dr. Helm moved to Santa Clarita to establish a premiere practice, excelling in delivering university-level care in a new state of the art setting. His practice focus remains cataract surgery, corneal transplantation and laser vision correction. He lives in Santa Clarita with his wife and children. His outside interests include woodworking, guitar, piano, singing and staying in shape.

Dr_Brian_R_Gross_MDDr. Brian R. Gross, M.D.

Dr. Gross was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree at UCLA and graduated with honors (Cum Laude). He went on to complete his medical training at University of California at Davis School of Medicine. Dr. Gross performed his internship at Highland General Hospital in Oakland, California. He subsequently specialized in Ophthalmology, completing his residency training at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.

In 1984 Dr. Gross opened his private practice of ophthalmology in Valencia, California and became a member of the medical staff of Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. For over 25 years Dr. Gross has provided personalized comprehensive care to the residents of the Santa Clarita Valley. In October of 2009 he joined Helm Vision Group to continue his practice of comprehensive ophthalmology.

Dr. Gross has two children, Josh and Elizabeth, who are both married, and an adorable 2 year old granddaughter, Eleanor. He has lived here in Valencia for 26 years and is an enthusiastic golfer. He loves sports and roots for the Dodgers, Lakers, and Bruins. He is also a voracious reader and movie fan.


Dr EnghDr. Douglas Engh

Dr. Douglas Engh has been a practicing ophthalmologist in the Santa Clarita Valley for the past 25 years.  He brings a wealth of experience combined with a gentle bedside manner.  Dr. Engh is a graduate of UCLA medical school and completed his residency training in ophthalmology at the University of California at Irvine.  Dr. Engh is a very experienced cataract surgeon whose practice includes laser vision correction and treatment of diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.  Dr. Engh is a long-time resident of the Santa Clarita Valley and is an expert bass fisherman having qualified twice for the Bassmaster Tour.





Dr_Sara_Jones-Gomberg_MDDr. Sara Jones-Gomberg, M.D.

Dr. Sara Jones-Gomberg obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics, including a minor in French at Holy Names University in Oakland, California. She went on to earn a master’s degree in mathematics at USC. She then completed her medical degree at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. Residency training in ophthalmology was performed at the University of Texas in Galveston.

Dr. Gomberg served as a comprehensive ophthalmologist for Kaiser Permanente for 28 years. She was instrumental in starting Kaiser’s ophthalmology clinic in Santa Clarita and has been there for 10 years. She has been recognized by both patients and peers with the Exceptional Physician Award. Dr. Gomberg has earned a reputation for delivering high quality care with skill and compassion. Dr. Gomberg holds a lifetime teaching credential.

She and her husband enjoy traveling, sailing, skiing, gardening and hiking. Dr. Gomberg’s compassion takes her to distant lands around the world performing free eye surgery to those in need. She has worked with Surgical Eye Expeditions Intl., Tibetan Aid Foundation, Laos Rehabilitation Foundation, Liga Flying Doctors of Mercy and Rotary clubs of many countries.

Dr_Lisa_Guan_ODDr. Lisa M. Guan, O.D.

Dr. Guan completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychobiology at UCLA. She went on to train at the New England College of Optometry in Massachusetts, finishing as a member of the optometric honor society Beta Sigma Kappa. She then pursued her interest in ocular disease by completing her residency at the eye care department of the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center.

Dr. Guan’s primary focus is in ocular disease and post surgical care, but she also has clinical experience in a wide variety of settings including pediatrics, specialty contact lenses and low vision. She provides comprehensive examinations, contact lens fittings, and diagnosis and treatment of ocular disease to patients of all ages.

When she is not practicing optometry, Dr. Guan enjoys hiking, yoga and playing piano.


Dr. Monprapa ChuaDr. Monprapa Chua.

Dr. Monprapa Chua graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from UCLA. She worked in the optometry field for a year before continuing her own training and completing her Doctor of Optometry degree from The Southern California College of Optometry. Shortly thereafter, she traveled to Thailand to participate in an optometry mission as a translator, and, to provide the underprivileged Thai people with eye exams and glasses. Dr. Chua then moved to New York and started her career working in various practices, but being a true Californian at heart, she returned to LA in late 2002 where she has been practicing since.

She finally made her home in Santa Clarita in 2005 and has been providing care in this Valley for 10 years. During her free time, she enjoys traveling with her family, and she stays active by engaging in outdoor activities and most sports.
